Peripheral Artery Disease Awareness Month

September is Peripheral Artery Disease Awareness Month. Peripheral artery disease, abbreviated as PAD, is when peripheral arteries narrow or are blocked, most commonly in the legs or abdomen.

PAD is caused by plaque buildup, which reduces or cuts off blood flow to the body, resulting in physical symptoms like pain, aches, cramps while walking, sores or ulcers.

Approximately 6.5 million Americans over 40 years old suffer from PAD, according to the CDC. PAD is underrecognized and undertreated, making it important to know the signs and symptoms of PAD.

Vascular diseases like peripheral artery disease are serious and can lead to long-term health problems if not treated. Many attribute symptoms of PAD, like pain in the legs and varicose veins, to aging, but some symptoms are too big to be ignored. If left untreated, PAD can cause gangrene, which necessitates amputation of the limb.

Some simple lifestyle changes can reduce your chances of developing PAD, including quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and regulating high cholesterol and blood pressure.
